Koralm railway boosts climate-friendly freight

The Koralm railway, commissioned in November 2025, marks a significant milestone for Austria's rail freight. Connecting Carinthia and Styria over 130 km, it offers shorter routes, increased capacity – up to 280 t more per train – and lower energy consumption thanks to gentler gradients. The line supports faster, more efficient logistics, reducing CO₂ emissions and energy use.

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group is already operating freight, including environmentally friendly single wagon trains, with clients like Omya, benefiting from sustainable, resource-efficient transport. Part of the Baltic-Adriatic corridor, the new route strengthens Austria's position as a European logistics hub, offering up to 30% more capacity. Passenger services start on 14 December, with travel times between Graz and Klagenfurt reduced from over two hours to just 41 minutes, further enhancing Austria's mobility, economy, and climate goals.
