Latin American cargo airlines fly 9,000 t of flowers

Lan Cargo and its affiliates transported more than 15 million bouquets of flowers all over the world during the four week flower rush that leads up to today's Valentine's Day - the peak season for flower exports. At this time of year, the company moves around 9,400 t of flowers, equating to 32% and 40% of the crop production in Colombia and Ecuador respectively.

Between 20 January and 9 February, around 200 Lan Cargo aircraft took off from Bogota and Medellin (Colombia) and Quito (Ecuador), tripling the average number of flights. Around 2,100 t of flowers per day were shipped. Most of the flights headed for the USA and the Netherlands, with the majority going via Miami FL, one of the world's most important distribution hubs. In Miami Lan Cargo owns the largest cold storage warehouse facility to be found at any US airport.
