Laying the keel of an emission-free ferry

The keel of the new ferry, which Scandlines is planning to deploy on the Puttgarden-Rødby route as from 2024, has been laid. The zero-emission unit has the working name PR24 and is being built at the Turkish shipyard Cemre. The entire route is to be emission-free by 2030.

The ferry's batteries can be recharged in Rødby within 17 minutes. Scandlines installed a 50 kV / 25 MW power cable at the port of Rødby in 2019. In spring 2023, work will begin on extending this cable to the ferry berths, where a transformer and charging station will be built.

With a crossing time of 70 minutes, the ferry is emission-free. It can also be used as a hybrid ferry, like those vessels now operating on the Scandlines routes between Germany and Denmark. The 147.4 m vessel will have a loading capacity of 66 cargo units (approx. 1,200 linear metres. EUR 80 million will be invested in the project. (sh)
