Less stress in Los Angeles

In August, container throughput at the Port of Los Angeles declined for the first time in almost two years. The port handled an estimated 806,000 teu this month, approximately 15% less than the same period in 2021.

Seasonal reasons apply, as Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka commented: “Some goods that usually arrive in August for the autumn and winter season were shipped earlier to make sure they reached their destination in time.”

While official August cargo volumes will be available soon on the port’s website, Seroka offered estimates that are expected to change only slightly when final.

In August 2022, loaded imports reached an estimated 404,000 teu, about 17% less compared to the same period last year. Loaded exports reached an estimated 100,000 teu, a moderate decline of 1%. Empties went down by 18%, arriving at estimated 301,000 teu.

From January till August 2022, the Port of Los Angeles moved an estimated 7.2 million teu, about 1.6% less than last year - which was a record year. (sh)
