LNG gains ground in Bilbao

Liquefied natural gas is playing a greater role in the port of Bilbao, now that the energy company Repsol has begun building a dedicated LNG terminal. A first client will be French shipping company Brittany Ferries with its newbuilds "Salamanca" and "Santoña", which will enter into service in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

The construction of the terminal, which is scheduled to open in Q1/2022, is part of the collaboration agreement signed in 2019 between both companies for the supply of this alternative fuel for the shipping company's operations in Spain (Bilbao and Santander).

The Biscayan terminal will have a cryogenic tank with a storage capacity of 1,000 cbm of LNG. The project will involve an investment of more than EUR 10 million, co-financed by the European Commission through the CEF - connecting Europe facilities programme. (cd)
