Longer trains and new hinterland services for Kiel's port

The structure and technology of the tracks leading to Kiel’s shunting station in Meiersdorf (Germany) have been enhanced by Deutsche Bahn in such a way that freight trains with an effective length of 740 m (535 m before) can now enter and exit the station.

The port of Kiel expects a growth rate of 25% in combined traffic already for the next year. In addition to the existing connections offered by Kombiverkehr, which link Kiel to the national and European rail network, there will be a 690 m long direct train operated by the Belgian railfreight company CFL Cargo to Bettembourg in Luxembourg.

EUR 7.9 million were invested into the expansion and technical upgrade, which should make hinterland rail services more competitive, the port of Kiel says. (ben)
