MAJ warns of a seafarers' exodus

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) expressed its growing concerns about future seafarer shortages if the crew change crisis should continue.

In a media release, the possibility of "exhausted crew choosing to leave the shipping industry rather than risk another long period trapped at sea" was underlined by the MAJ director general, the retired Rear Admiral Peter Brady.

He also pointed to the carelessness of the shipping industry which did not raise its voice loud enough "to demonstrate to world leaders the vital role crew play in the supply chain."

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) also urged nations to classify seafarers as “essential workers” in order to facilitate their smooth transit on shore, but so far only about 55 countries have done so. (cd)
