Matson launches whale detection tech
Matson has partnered with WhaleSpotter to deploy a ground-breaking whale detection system developed by WHOI, marking the first use of this technology in container shipping. The system utilises thermal imaging and AI to detect whales up to three nautical miles away, providing real-time verified alerts to help crews avoid whale strikes day or night. After supporting its development with a $ 1 m research grant and vessel access in 2023, Matson successfully trialled three units and ordered four more for routes near Hawaii and Alaska.
Field tests demonstrated the system's ability to detect surfacing whales miles away and deliver alerts within seconds, significantly improving marine safety. CEO Matt Cox praised the system's reliability and crew support, emphasising its role in zero-false-alert standards. Co-founded in 2024, WhaleSpotter is now scaling production, with plans to expand deployment across various vessel types worldwide. This partnership exemplifies how advanced technology can enhance marine conservation and maritime safety.
