Melbourne takes a dip

It is not a law of nature that volumes have to grow in all the ports of the world. Traffic at the Port of Melbourne has gone down since the beginning of this year. In May 2022, the port saw its container throughput shrinking by 6% compared to the same period in 2021, reaching a total of 271,000 teu.

Total container imports dropped by 3.9% in May 2021 and containerised imports of manufactures, furniture, metal manufactures and textiles declined as well.

The outlook is gloomy, too. At this stage, container trade in June 2022 is below the same month in 2021. However, there is hope that the situation might ease now that Chinese ports have reopened after two months of lockdowns. (sh)
