Melbourne terminal investing in green technology
Victoria International Container Terminal (Vict) in the port of Melbourne is expanding capacity and reducing emissions by acquiring four hybrid automatic container carriers (ACCs) from Kalmar. These carriers, equipped with lithium-ion batteries and energy recovery systems, enhance energy efficiency by 40% and cut CO₂ emissions by 50 t per unit annually.
The investment supports Vict’s goal of reaching a 1.5 million teu annual capacity. As the only fully automated container terminal in the southern hemisphere, Vict continues to integrate new technology to meet growing demand while minimising environmental impact. (pb)
