MIP completes first phase of Eastern Med hub
Mersin International Port (MIP), a major gateway on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, has completed the first construction phase of its new East Med Hub 2.
The USD 455 million expansion includes the full dredging works and the extension of the quay wall from 500 to 880 m, now offering a 17.5 m draught suitable for two ultra-large containerships of up to 24,000 teu. Once fully operational by early 2026, the new terminal will increase MIP’s annual capacity from 2.6 to 3.6 million teu.
This major infrastructure project aims to meet rising demand in the Eastern Mediterranean trade and strengthen MIP’s strategic role in global container flows. Local government officials, trade representatives and executives from PSA, IFM and Akfen attended the inauguration ceremony in Mersin. (ah)
