Modal shift in goods traffic stalling

Practically the same number of HGVs travelled through the Swiss Alps in 2022 as in the year before. According to the latest statistics from the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT), rail's market share remained stable at a high level.

The number of truck journeys fell only slightly last year by 15,000 to 880,000. Because shipments by rail also declined to some extent, their market share in freight transport through the Alps remained unchanged at 73.9% last year.

The FOT attributes this to the accentuated problems of the railways in international north-south traffic, especially in Germany, as well as to the increase in the cost of traction current and train paths. (ben)
