MoU for standard design in carriers

On 1 December 2025 Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, alongside Imabari Shipbuilding, K LINE, MOL, NYK, JMU and NSY, signed a memorandum of understanding to create a standard design framework for liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carriers and next-generation alternative fuel ships using decarbonisation technologies like ammonia fuel. MILES (formerly MI LNG Company) will lead the initial design, enabling other Japanese shipyards to develop functional and production designs based on these common standards.

This collaboration aims to enhance the global competitiveness of Japanese shipbuilders by involving domestic shipyards in the design process. The participating companies, including K Line, MOL and NYK, plan to invest in Miles to foster this cross-industry collaboration. The initiative is designed to boost sustainable practices and support the transition to a carbon-neutral society through improved ship design and construction methodologies.
