Namibian to head Sara

Johny Smith, CEO of Transnamib, Namibia’s national rail services operator, since February 2018, has accepted the nomination to lead the Southern African Railways Association (Sara) as its president for the next twelve months.

Sara is an association of railway companies and other stakeholders in the region of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) that promotes and lobbies for rail transport. Sara’s current initiatives address five strategic areas: infrastructure development, railway operations, resource mobilisation, marketing & publicity and safety.

Smith: "Rail services need to be customer-driven. This is the key for success in both freight and passenger transport. Railway corridors form the backbone of the network and therefore present a major opportunity for railway operators to increase their market share." (amh)
