NatRoad seeks Accu reform

The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) has urged the Australian government to amend the Australian carbon credit unit (Accu) scheme to make it more accessible for small road freight businesses. In a submission to the department of climate change, energy and water, NatRoad said current compliance requirements, costs, and calculation methods prevent smaller operators from participating.

CEO Warren Clark stressed that 98% of the sector consists of small firms, for which the system is too costly and complex. NatRoad recommends upfront financial benefits instead of long delays, longer crediting periods of ten years to match fleet renewal cycles, streamlined administration, and calculation methods suited to real-world conditions.
