New bridge to improve railfreight services

US short line railroad Reading & Northern (R&N) has opened a new USD 14 million bridge over the Lehigh River in Pennsylvania (USA). It connects the R&N's Reading and Lehigh Divisions and allows an expedited move between Reading and the Scranton area.

According to R&N CEO Andy Muller, the brand-new bridge will improve the efficiency of the regional rail freight transportation. The bridge was built with public funding and a 30% match by the railroad after a planning phase over more than 20 years.

The privately held railroad company serves over 70 customers in nine eastern Pennsylvania counties with almost 1,300 own freight cars and currently handles 34,000 carloads over 640 km of track. (ben)
