New lightning to light up the skies

Correos Cargo, a new airfreight service, will fly from Madrid to Hong Kong for the Correos Group, and also connect to Latin America.

It’s becoming ever-more popular for maritime carriers and logistics companies to reach for the stars – that is to say, to opt in to an airfreight provider. Now the Correos Group has launched the air transport service Correos Cargo in Spain. It will deploy Airbus A330s on the Madrid–Hong Kong route and fly on the logistics axis to and from Latin America too.

Meeting growing demand with a partner on board

The Madrid-based Correos Group has reacted to the ongoing boom in electronic trade by launching Correos Cargo to handle the growing volume of parcels. The total of 135 million packages handled in the first half of 2021 represented sales growth of 25% and volume growth of 12.6% vis-à-vis the same period of 2020. Online sales platforms’ increasingly intercontinental framework for supply and demand has also left its mark on the business. Even before this latest spurt, e-commerce activities in Latin America had already augmented substantially in 2019 – by 21.3%. No less than 430 million internet users as well as approximately 155 million digital customers are two of the figures that illustrate how great the regional potential is.

The Correos Group wouldn’t get anywhere without partners in the air, however. Its latest project is offered by Iberojet, one of the two airlines in Spain’s Ávoris travel corporation. The carrier will operate the services on the Madrid–Hong Kong–Madrid route. Correos is also motivated by a desire to fortify the Spanish economics internationally, and to this end will make the most of its strategic location as a logistics centre between Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America.
