New short line link pays off

The new 8 km long short line rail link allows Drax, an American manufacturer of compressed wood pellets, to reduce supply chain emissions and biomass costs.

The track connects Drax’s LaSalle pellet plant in northern Louisiana (USA) to the regional rail network, enabling freight trains to deliver the pellets to Louisiana’s Port of Greater Baton Rouge.

“Since the new rail spur was commissioned last May we can deliver around 7,000 t of sustainable biomass to the port of Greater Baton Rouge in each train, compared to just 27 t that could be transported by each truck previously,” Drax said. The USD 15 million rail link already contributed to a USD 5/t reduction in Drax’s biomass production costs in 2019. (ben)
