New study on Bremenports' hinterland traffic

The Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) has presented a comprehensive analysis of hinterland traffic in the ports of Bremen (Germany). The study, which was commissioned by th operator Bremenports, is based on the volumes of 2018, when Bremen's ports recorded a container throughput of 5.4 million teu.

The various segments showed very diverse diverse performance in 2018. In the traditionally strong transhipment traffic, volumes dropped to around 2.8 million teu. By contrast, traffic in the hinterland showed a remarkable improvement.

In 2018, 2.6 million teu were moved by inland barge, train or truck between the container terminals in Bremerhaven and the hinterland. This corresponds to a plus of 300,000 teu compared to the reference year 2013. Developments in the Czech (188,000 teu p.a.) and Austrian (166,000 teu) markets were particularly encouraging. (mw)
