Next-gen vessel sets course for ammonia power

The Grimaldi Group, headquartered in Naples (Italy), has officially named the Grande Shanghai, its first next-generation pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), during a ceremony at China Merchants Heavy Industries in Haimen (Jiangsu, China). Designed in collaboration with Knud E. Hansen, the 220-m vessel can carry 9,000 CEU and is the first in the fleet to receive the RINA "Ammonia Ready" class notation.

Compared to the previous generation, it cuts fuel consumption per unit by 50%. Equipped with 5 MWh lithium batteries, 2,500 sqm of solar panels, cold ironing, and a dual-foil gate rudder, the ship is built for lower emissions and efficient operations. She is the first of ten PCTCs ordered by Grimaldi – five with 9,000 CEU and five with 9,800 CEU capacity – as the group strengthens its sustainable deepsea ro-ro fleet. (ah)
