Nicaragua unveils route for Atlantic-Panama canal
The Nicaraguan government and Hong Kong Nicaragua Development (HKND), the Chinese company backing the aim to construct a canal linking the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, have unveiled details about the proposed route.
The new 278 km waterway is supposed to stretch from Punta Gorda on the Caribbean coast through Lake Nicaragua to the mouth of the river Brito on the Pacific side of the country.
The 50-year concession to build and operate the canal was awarded to HKND last year. Initially, the cost of the project was slated at USD 40 billion. However, it appears to have already risen to USD 50 billion.
