No progress for climate protection in freight traffic

Germany is making but little progress in its efforts to take more cargo off the roads and improve climate protection.

According to figures calculated by the German transport association Allianz pro Schiene, railfreight‘s market share grew by a mere 0.3% to 19% in 2019. It increased by only 2.5% in one decade. This is far too little to achieve the federal government’s aim of a share of 25% by 2030.

With a market share of more than 71%, road haulage thus retains its dominant position in the freight sector. The transport association has identified ten reasons for this, including the high tax on electricity for railfreight companies, many border crossings without electrification, industrial areas without rail access and outdated coupling systems.
