North-East Corridor reopens for rail traffic

Transnet Freight (TFR) in South Africa has resumed limited service, following a massive disruption caused by floods last week.

Operations have commenced across the corridor branch line network, with TFR Teams now working on clearing staged trains and the backlog on the Witbank to Richards Bay corridor, a channel for export coal, chrome, and ferrochrome.

The decision to resume service follows an extensive safety exercise which included a trolley trip by TFR engineers on the branch line network to certify the lines as safe and fit for secure train operations, the carrier said.

Rail traffic on the North-East-Corridor had to be suspended last Friday, 10 February 2023, after heavy, abnormal rains had damaged the rail infrastructure. (ben)
