North Sea Port extends rail corridor to Baltic

Following a request from North Sea Port, the European Commission will extend the railfreight corridor between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal Zone.

North Sea Port is already part of the 'Railfreight corridor Rhine-Alpine' and 'North Sea-Mediterranean'. It will now also join North Sea-Baltic' axis. This corridor runs from Belgium and the Netherlands via Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia to Estonia. In Poland, the corridoroffers connections to the Chinese Silk Road.

Seven to eight million t of cargo enter or leave the North Sea Port by rail every year, which is 10% of all goods traffic between the port and the hinterland. More than 300 trains pass through the port area every week. (ben)
