Not 'for the birds', but 'against the cocks'
CBP officers in Cincinnati intercepted a package from Mexico on 3 May containing ten pairs of cockspur covers and ten knife sheaths used in illegal cockfighting. The parcel, falsely declared as "20 articles for birds," was headed to Corsica, TX.
The shipment violates the Animal Welfare Act and US laws prohibiting trade in animal fighting gear. "CBP officers are trained to detect such concealment tactics," said LaFonda Sutton-Burke, Director of Field Operations in Chicago. Cockfighting items like these are outlawed under the 2018 Farm Act. The seizure highlights CBP’s continued vigilance at international ports to block dangerous contraband from entering US communities. (ah)
