OCG tackles seafarers' mental and sexual health
The OneCare Group (OCG) is calling for open dialogue around seafarers' emotional and sexual wellbeing – long-neglected aspects of life at sea. Experts warn that prolonged isolation during voyages can lead to frustration, depression and even aggression.
"Unmet psychological and physiological needs can manifest as stress and withdrawal," said Charles Watkins of Marine Medical Solutions (MMS). Psychologist Stella Kiss stressed the stigma surrounding these issues. OCG’s training programmes now cover STIs, safe sex, and support for women and LGBTQ+ crew.
MMS founder Dr Jens Tülsner noted concerns over undiagnosed or undeclared infections onboard. Clinical psychologist Luca Hütter advocates peer dialogue to ease mental strain. OCG aims to foster openness and proactive support for crews worldwide.
"Promoting sexual health requires a multifaceted approach that considers cultural sensitivities, fosters an environment of openness, and provides targeted support for LGBTQ2+ crew members," said Dafni Katsampa (photo), Psychologist at OneCare Group. (ah)
