
On grounds in Baku and Pudong
The global ground and cargo handling landscape is rapidly evolving, as two major players announced landmark expansions.
In Shanghai, Swissport International has launched operations in China for the first time, partnering with Smargo – a joint venture of Avinex Logistics and China Eastern Airlines Logistics – to manage the new "Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal" at Shanghai Pudong Airport. Scheduled to open later this year, the 215 million USD facility will handle up to 1.2 million t of freight annually. "By connecting Shanghai with our global network, we’ll enable exporters to reach international markets up to two days faster," said Warwick Brady, Swissport’s CEO.
Meanwhile, in Baku, Dnata and Silk Way Group signed a joint venture to provide ground handling and cargo services at the future Alat International Airport, set to open in 2027. The project is exptected to create around 1,000 local jobs and make Azerbaijan a key cargo hub linking Europe and Asia. (ah)
