Orphaned giants

Viktor Tolmachev, “father” of the largest mass-produced transport aircraft, died at the age of 84 on 7 June 2018.


After the Russian engineer graduated from the Kharkiv Aviation Institute in 1959, he worked at the Antonov Design Bureau in Kiev until 1992. His roles in Kiev included that of chief designer of the Antonov AN-124 Ruslan, whose maiden flight took place on 24 December 1982, and the AN-225 Mriya (1988).


Later in his career, he was technical director of Volga-Dnepr Airlines and advisor to the group president, Alexey Isaikin. (ah)
