Piggyback service launched in Russia

The first dispatch of 17 piggyback platforms with car trailers has left Neftekamsk station on Gorkovskaya Railways for Usinsk station on Northern Railways. The distance between the two stations is 1,828 km.

The platforms are transported on exclusive long-base flatcars that are owned by Russia’s federal Freight Company, a subsidiary of Russian Railways (RZD). The flatcars can carry vehicles up to 18.75 m in length.

The trailers also have special modules for accommodating and moving personnel working on a rotational basis at remote facilities in the oil and gas industry.

For the client and cargo owner, this is the first experience of cooperation with the railways. Previously, the client used specialised road transport units – low-loaders – to move its trailers, RZD said. (ben)
