PNG's big day

ICTSI's South Pacific terminals, SPICT in Lae and MIT in Motukea, Papua New Guinea, marked a significant milestone by servicing the largest container ship to call at the ports in the region.

The "Kota Gabung", a 2,754 teu gearless vessel operated by Mariana Express Line, visited Lae on 12 November and Motukea on 17 November 2023 as part of the North Asia Express (NAX) service. Under a vessel sharing agreement with Swire Shipping Line, this route links China's main ports with Papua New Guinea and Northern Australia.

The event underscores ICTSI South Pacific's commitment to modernising port facilities and highlights growing confidence in their service standards. SPICT now has two post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes, the largest in the country, and MIT has added another mobile harbour crane to enhance its waterside capacity and improve operational efficiency.
