Poland temporarily shuts China rail link
According to the news portal 'TVP World', the closure of Poland’s border with Belarus has disrupted one of the most important rail routes between China and the European Union, valued at around EUR 25 billion annually.
Poland imposed the measure ahead of joint Russian–Belarusian military exercises, citing security concerns following a drone incursion. Three railfreight crossings have been shut until further notice. According to 'TVP World', around 90% of China–EU rail freight usually passes through Poland.
Beijing has urged Warsaw to reopen the corridor and will raise the issue during talks in Warsaw between Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi and his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski. A Chinese government spokesman described the China–Europe Railway Express as a “flagship project” of bilateral cooperation. Railfreight volumes on the route grew by 10.6% in 2024, with cargo value reaching around EUR 25 billion. (js)
