Port Climate's Eleven forge ahead

The World Ports Climate Action Programme (Wpcap) has taken five more important steps. The CEOs of the eleven aligned ports have adopted the following five agreements:

First, more efficiency, speed optimisation and enhanced planning on routing and turn-around time in ports requires more sharing of data, that's why the network will now support the IMO Global Industry Alliance while developing a joint roadmap on reducing emissions in the ship-port interface.

Secondly, all parties in the network will invest more in the equipment for power-to-ship. The eleven ports decided to develop three coalitions involving liquid bulk (tankers), containers and cruise, preparing investment plans by early 2021.

The third agreement is on alternative fuels, on which Wpcap has now agreed to facilitate the launch of pilot projects in 2021.

Fourthly, working relations with terminal operators in the ports will be intensified in order to introduce equipment demonstration and build a database for information sharing.

The final commitment is to improve the impact of policy instruments that ports may choose to use, supporting both decarbonisation of sea going vessels and cargo handling equipment.

Launched in September 2018, the Wpcap now comprises the ports of Rotterdam, Long Beach, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, Vancouver, Antwerp, Barcelona, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Haropa - Port of Le Havre and Yokohama. (mw)
