Port of Barcelona awards car terminal to NYK

NYK will invest EUR 75 million to develop a new 101,000 sqm vehicle terminal at the port of Barcelona, marking the largest Japanese investment in a Spanish state port. The terminal, due to open in early 2027, will feature a fully electric operations concept and a silo for 8,160 vehicles topped with solar panels. Designed to handle up to 180,000 vehicles annually, it supports rising EV imports from the Far East. Located next to the intermodal rail terminal, NYK plans up to 10 weekly trains.

The port has also awarded Powercon a EUR 12.2 million contract to install its first shore power system for cruise ships at the MSC terminal. The OPS will be integrated with the port’s new medium-voltage network and centralised energy hub, contributing to its broader decarbonisation strategy.(ah)
