Port of Barcelona to construct south railway node
The Territorial Commission of Catalonia has approved the intermodal logistics terminal urban master plan (PDU) for the port of Barcelona, enabling the construction of a new south railway node. This project requires an investment of approximately EUR 265 m, with EUR 26 m dedicated to creating green areas. The railway node will include various infrastructures, such as a rolling road terminal and a loading terminal, enhancing the port's capacity to transfer goods from road to rail, thereby reducing emissions and road congestion.
The new railway infrastructure is anticipated to eliminate more than 1.7 m truck journeys over the past decade, contributing to significant CO2 reductions. With six terminals planned, the node aims to serve both maritime and terrestrial traffic effectively. Additionally, the PDU will create 24 ha of new public green areas, forming an ecological network that connects logistics areas and natural spaces. This initiative reflects a commitment to modernising the port in an environmentally sustainable manner, adapting to contemporary logistical demands.
