Port of Long Beach enjoys a busy August 2019

This year, the port of Long Beach recorded the fifth-busiest August in its 108-year history. A total of almost 664,000 teu were handled during this month. Nevertheless, August 2018 was stronger (+2.3%). In August 2019, imports slid by 5.9% to 323,000 teu, while exports rose 4.5% to 125,000 teu.

The quantity of empty containers sent overseas for use in the global supply chain decreased by 0.3% to 216,000 teu. Long Beach volumes after the first eight months of the year 2019 are 4,971,000 teu, 6.6% down from last year’s record figures.

“These results are strong for any North American seaport, but lag behind our record high numbers last year, when retailers shipped goods to beat expected tariffs,” said port of Long Beach executive director Mario Cordero. “International trade has continued and will continue to evolve,” said Long Beach harbour commission president Bonnie Lowenthal.
