Port of Strasbourg: reconquista à la française

The inland port of Strasbourg handled 7.6 million t of cargo in 2019. This significant increase of 28.5% compared to 2018 was partially due to the recovery after the exceptional low water phenomenon of the previous year. In 2019, the PAS returned to its usual tonnage.

The local Rhine Europe Terminals also returned to regular levels with container traffic of almost 382,000 teu across all modes of transport, an increase of 5.9% compared to 2018. The number of containers handled by waterway gained further momentum showing a rise of + 16.4% (77,000 teu) compared to the previous year. Hinterland intermodality also grew in importance.

In 2019, rail traffic reached a volume of almost 1.4 million t, more than half of it in containerised goods, and the port of Strasbourg invested nearly EUR 10 million in infrastructure. More than a third of the budget is devoted to the maintenance of roads and railways, which represent more than 130 km of transport infrastructure in the port (100 km of railways and 34 km of roads belonging to the PAS).

On the passenger side, nearly 1,600 Rhine cruises called at the port of Strasbourg in 2019, carrying more than 230,000 passengers in total. (mw)
