Positive cargo development at Vienna airport

The airfreight business at Vienna airport is picking up again, with 68,058 t of airfreight handled for import and export in Q1/2024. This represents a year-on-year increase of 16%.

Compared to the pre-coronavirus year 2019, the current figures represent a growth of 1,417 t or 2%. The tonnage handled in the pharma handling centre in the first quarter also increased by 6.9% to a total of 886 t. The positive figures are primarily due to the significant increases in belly cargo on passenger aircraft.

"The development of airfreight in the first quarter gives us cause for optimism. Demand is picking up noticeably, both for general cargo and for pharmaceutical shipments, which we handle in our own pharmaceutical centre. Changes in the flight schedule have already added additional long-haul capacity to North America and Asia," says Michael Zach, head of handling services at Flughafen Wien. (cj)
