PtL world premiere in northern Germany

In order to reduce air traffic’s carbon footprint, Atmosfair, a non-profit climate protection organisation based in Bonn, has inaugurated the world's first commercial-scale power-to-liquid (PtL) plant in Werlte/Emsland.

To produce the fuel, CO2 from a biogas plant is used, with additional CO2 actively filtered from the air. The CO2 is only released again when it is burned in the aircraft engine. A flight with 100% e-kerosene would therefore be almost carbon-neutral. Following this example, atmosfair also wants to build PtL plants in global south in the future.

Kuehne+Nagel and Lufthansa Cargo have agreed on an exclusive partnership for the promotion and use of power-to-liquid aviation fuel. The logistics service providers have jointly committed to supporting the world's first production site for synthetic crude oil by purchasing the equivalent of 20 t, or 25,000 litres, annually. (ah)
