Rail infrastructure expansion for port of Fremantle
Fremantle port in Western Australia is set to expand its rail infrastructure to reduce the growth of port-related truck traffic. The AUD 31.4 million (EUR 22 million) project is designed to increase the efficiency and capacity of the rail infrastructure servicing the port's container trade, by extending the existing rail terminal from 400 m to 690 m. In 2002 the railway only transported 2% of the port's containers, now trains haul 14% of these boxes to/from the port. The volume of containers that currently uses the railway reduces truck movements by some 72,000 truck trips annually. The project is due for completion by the end of June 2014. (ben)
