Rail sector demands a cap on electricity prices

The rail industry is reeling from massive increases in energy costs, as if the ailing infrastructure were not enough of a burden. The transport associations Allianz pro Schiene, Die Güterbahnen and the Association of German Transport Companies are therefore calling for an electricity price cap for the entire industry at EU and national levels.

Otherwise, they argue, there is a risk that companies will shift freight from the railways back to the roads, because the costs for diesel fuel have not risen as much as those for the electricity needed to power the trains.

The associations also demand to impose a limit on energy prices for maintenance workshops in the sector, since they are also heavily affected by the rise in production and heating costs. (ben)
