Rail to carry one out of five parcels

DB Cargo will transport more parcels by rail for logistics group Deutsche Post DHL. The parcels will be shipped via seven new connections, increasing the share of parcels transported by rail from 2% to 6%.

In the long term, the aim is to transport around 20% of Germany's domestic parcel consignments by rail, which will require several improvements, such as faster wagons for light freight traffic, expansion of infrastructure, better train paths and more efficient loading.

Each train can carry up to 100,000 parcels. Compared to road haulage, DPDHL's rail shipments currently save 1,000 t of CO2 per month. (ben)
