Railfreight in Kaliningrad tripled

Kaliningrad Railways carried nearly 117,000 teu between China and Europe from January to November 2021, thus trippling the container volumes achieved in the same period in 2020.

Multimodal routes carried 84.8% of the total container volume. 99,600 teu containers were transported on Kaliningrad Railways and then dispatched further via ports, 4.3 times more than in the first eleven months of 2020.

Kaliningrad Railways belongs to Russian Railways (RZD) and operates a 963 km line in Kaliningrad. The Russian Oblast has no common border with Russia. But with the shortest route from central Russia to Western Europe running through Kaliningrad, rail is the main transport artery between Kaliningrad and the rest of Russia, RZD said. (ben)
