Recent developments in global piracy

The ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB)'s report on global piracy in 2022 sums up 115 recorded incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships – compared to 132 in 2021. In total, 107 vessels were boarded, two vessels hijacked, five attack attempts failed and one vessel was fired upon.

In many cases, vessels were either anchored or steaming when boarded, with nearly all the incidents happening during the night.

About 50% of them occurred in Southeast Asian waters, particularly in the Singapore Straits, where incidents continue to rise. In the Gulf of Guinea, incidents went down from 35 in 2021 to 19 in 2022. The IMB continues to call for sustained efforts to ensure the safety of seafarers worldwide. (sh)
