Reinsurers face heavy losses after Dreamliner disaster
The 12 June crash of Air India flight AI171, which killed 241 people, is expected to significantly harden the global aviation reinsurance market, says GlobalData.
The accident marks the first fatal hull loss of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Claims from this single event may exceed India’s entire annual aviation insurance premium of USD 127.8 million. As more than 95% of such risk is reinsured globally, international reinsurers will bear the brunt.
The industry could face over USD 200 million in costs, including aircraft loss and liability under the Montreal Convention. Additional business interruption claims may follow if India grounds its Boeing B787-8 fleet, raising concerns for the 2026 reinsurance renewal cycle. (ah)
