Rising seafarer arrests spark international concern
InterManager, a shipping trade association, is urging the industry to contribute data to a new campaign highlighting the growing issue of the criminalisation of seafarers.
The association is concerned about harsh treatment and detention, and is compiling statistics to share with the IMO and industry stakeholders. Current data reveals 118 cases, with shipmasters most affected (63%), and incidents frequently involving tanker and bulk carrier crews.
InterManager cites the case of Polish captain Andrzej Lasota, jailed without trial in Mexico, as it has called to action for systemic change. The campaign aims to drive informed discussions and protect seafarers globally. (pb)
