Safety of seafarers a paramount concern

At a meeting in Milan on 13 April, Emanuele Grimaldi, chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), briefed the G7 transport ministers in Milan, on the maritime sector’s security concerns.

Referring to the 25 seafarers from the “Galaxy Leader” who are still being held captive by the Houthis, Grimaldi underscored the critical importance of maritime safety in the face of regional conflicts and the need for global cooperation on security.

The participants also discussed the energy transition within the maritime sector and urged the global shipping industry to remain resilient amidst fluctuating demand and supply chain strains. They condemned the recent attacks on merchant ships and repeated their demand for compliance with international law and the safety of maritime personnel. (pb)
