Saudis expand railfreight network

As part of a massive investment strategy, Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) is planning to expand its railway infrastructure from around 5,000 km to 8,000 km.

The plans include the multi-billion dollar flagship "Land Bridge" project, which will stretch more than 1,300 km from east to west and connect the kingdom's ports from the Arabian Gulf to the Red Sea for the first time. The “Land Bridge” is expected to increase capacity to 50 million t of cargo per year.

Some major projects have already been completed. A rail network with some of the world’s longest railway lines has now been equipped with the state-of-the-art digital train control system ETCS L2. This enables the operation of trains with a length of 3 km, SAR says. (ben)
