Setting traction acquisition record straight
South Africa-based Transnet says it rejects baseless reports suggesting that its locomotive acquisition programme is in tatters.
Two years ago, the transport service provider awarded contracts for the acquisition of 1,064 diesel and electric locomotives to four global manufacturers. CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive and Bombardier Transportation South Africa were mandated to supply 599 electric locomotives, while GE South Africa and CNR South Africa were requested to build and supply 465 diesel locomotives.
So far, 182 units have been delivered by General Electric and CSR. The programme is therefore on track, according to Transnet. (ben)
