Shipping moves beyond IMO

Following the IMO’s decision to delay amendments to 'Marpol Annex VI' by one year, NatPower marine has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing decarbonisation without waiting for regulation. The vote, taken at the marine environment protection committee’s extraordinary session in London, postpones the creation of a global carbon-pricing mechanism for shipping.

NatPower marine CEO Stefano D.M. Sommadossi (pictured) said the delay must not slow progress: "Shore power and near-shore electrification are proven and scalable, delivering deep emissions cuts today." He added that innovators will continue to move ahead, citing aviation and automotive examples where regulation followed innovation. NatPower marine plans to invest £3 billion by 2030 to develop 120 clean-port sites worldwide, aiming to form a network of green shipping corridors. (js)
