Six new tracks for Rhine Valley railway

The new tracks built for freight traffic at the busy border crossing between Weil am Rhein (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland) run parallel to the existing Rhine Valley railway. Two will be used as through tracks and four for customs clearance and for changing locomotives and personnel.

As part of the ongoing expansion work along the Rhine-Alpine European freight corridor, Deutsche Bahn is laying around 12 km of track and renewing a railway bridge.

Goods trains were previously handled at Weil am Rhein railway station. The upgrades of the Rhine Valley railway at the Basel junction are being carried out in several stages, with completed sections entering service successively, DB said. (ben)
